At Heartland Aesthetica, we understand that the health and appearance of your skin are paramount. Lesion Excision is a precise and minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove various types of skin lesions, including moles, skin cancers, cysts, lipomas, skin tags, and other growths. It is often performed for both medical and cosmetic purposes, ensuring the health of your skin.
Lesion removal can be essential for diagnosing and treating potentially harmful lesions and preventing complications. In addition to medical concerns, some individuals choose lesion excision to improve their skin's appearance and overall aesthetics. Skin lesions are very common, and can vary in size, shape and location. For patients concerned about the cosmetic appearance of their skin after the excision, a plastic surgeon is often the preferred choice. They have specialized training in aesthetics and seek to minimize scarring. There are a number of removal techniques available including shaving, direct excision and laser therapy. During your consultation Dr. Voge will discuss your treatment options.
Benign skin lesions are non-cancerous and pose minimal risk developing into cancer. They are typically moles, skin tags, warts, cysts and lipomas. While generally harmless, they can be bothersome or cosmetically undesirable. Pre-cancerous lesions such as Actinic keratosis and certain types of moles may indicate a higher risk of skin cancer. Early detection and treatment are crucial in such cases. Malignant Lesions are skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential for managing these conditions effectively.

The procedure is typically performed in our office with a local anesthetic that is injected under the skin to numb the area. The lesion(s) is removed and sutures are placed to close the wound. After the procedure the tissue is sent to a lab for analysis to confirm it is benign or completely excised. Typically the lesion is sent to pathology to ensure it has all been removed and no further treatment is needed. Sutures are removed within 5-14 days depending on the location of the lesion.

The duration of a lesion excision procedure varies depending on the size, type, and location of the lesion. Generally it takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Procedures that involve the surgical removal tend to leave a scar. However, Dr. Voge offers each patient a unique and individualized treatment to achieve the desired outcome with the smallest scar possible and minimal risk of complications. The extent of scarring can vary depending on factors such as the type of lesion and individual skin characteristics.
The recovery period is variable and dependent on the type of lesion and treatment used for removal. Dr. Voge is meticulous and diligent about postoperative wound care and will discuss this with you in detail including providing written instructions the day of the procedure. Activity may be restricted for 1-2 weeks depending on the lesion and location. Most patients are able to return to work and social activity on the same day. To prevent pigmentation of the scar, use of sunscreen is recommended for the first year after treatment.
